Herpes - A Common But Annoying Virus

People seem to be worried more about getting HIV or AIDS than genital herpes.

It is not surprising because the former conditions are perceived as dangerous or life threatening.

But according to doctors there is a relationship between herpes and HIV, which should not be ignored.

“If an individual has genital herpes caused due to herpes type 2 virus, the risk of getting infected by HIV is significantly higher”, says a doctor based in Arlington. “It is for this reason hsv testing is essential if a person experiences sores or ulcers in the genital area”.

Medical scientists are also of the view that many cases of genital herpes do not fit the classic symptoms, which are sores or ulcers in the genital area.

“Sometimes mild irritants can be present, which are mistaken for trauma”.

People must also understand that any skin to skin contact from the genital area is sufficient to transmit this virus.

Symptoms of genital herpes

During the initial outbreak, which occurs around a week or 10 days after sexual exposure to the virus, the following signs are noticed:
  • Tingling sensation in the affected areas such as the genitals buttocks, or thighs.
  • Groups of red bumps that develop into sores
To infect people, the HSV or Herpes Simplex Virus (both HSV1 & HSV2) must penetrate the body through broken skin. Once the virus gets into contact with the mucous membranes, it begins to multiply.

Infected people have the potential to transmit the virus to other parts of their own bodies such as the buttocks, thighs, and hands. This, however, is rare since people develop antibodies that safeguard against this condition.

Although expert doctors can make a prima facie detection of herpes by its characteristic lesion, a laboratory test is essential for final diagnosis.

Typical HSV testing can consist of the following:
  • Viral culture of the lesion
  • Blood test to detect antibodies
It is possible for patients to manage most herpes simplex infections at home with over the counter pain killers, which provide relief from pain and other symptoms.

Other methods of symptomatic relief include:
  • Maintaining good hygiene by avoiding touching of sores and washing hands regularly
  • Choosing cotton underclothes instead of synthetic
  • Local application of ice pack
  • Avoiding sex during the early symptoms of herpes
HSV testing is recommended if you exhibit genital symptoms that could be related to herpes. Some doctors in Arlington VA offer rapid, anonymous, and hassle free testing of HSV.
